for Lone Peak Hospital and HCA Healthcare foundation, replacing Brian Lines. Motion to approve
Haeli by Mike Roosendaal, seconded by Jenn Andrs. Haeli Barlow was unanimously approved. - New Board of Education Representative- Welcome Katie Dahle as our new representative from the
Canyons District Board of Ed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Brenda Suta made a motion to approve the minutes from the November 21, 2024, meeting with a second
from Greg Summerhays. The minutes were unanimously approved.
SUPERINTENDENT COMMENTS / LEGISLATIVE UPDATE- Dr. Rick Robins & Susan Edwards
Legislative Session- At this point in time, it looks like Higher Ed and the Courts are going to be the main
focus of the session. Yes, money has been pumped into education in the last few years, but it has been
given with a prescription on how it should be spent. School safety is a big focus, but it is coming as
almost unfunded to public education. We are also seeing that money is being taken away in small ways.
Increment bills are being passed and given toward housing incentives, redirecting from public education.
We will be keeping everyone updated through our email tracker. Link will be provided to board members
after the meeting today. - Question about Bill 102- establishing sunset dates for programs. How is the education
community feeling? Susan has not had a chance to look at it yet, it is a new bill.
o Beverly Taylor Sorenson programs are in question as to whether they will continue. - Merit Pay Bill was passed last session. Our board has studied it and has voted to not participate.
They chose not to because it benefitted charter schools more than public schools. The bill also
benefits individual teachers instead of raising the whole. Our board has consistently used
incentives that will raise the whole.
**Recorder was turned on at 7:54 during Susan’s presentation.
Rick Robins- We have closed on the eBay campus, finalized on December 31, 2024. Our focus groups
were a great success and shows the excitement of the opportunity we have as a district. Interviews are
ongoing for the Director of the Innovation Center. Look for the announcement at the second February
Canyons School Board meeting. It looks like fall 2027 will be the projected opening date. MHTN is the
architect for the project.
Question- How have we budgeted for the Innovation Ctr? The Board will be issuing a lease revenue bond
to pay for the center. We will also be selling a property in Draper, Midvale and the future sale of our
current CTEC building.
FOUNDATION REPORT- Denise Haycock, Development ORicer
Business- We will be presenting to the Board of Ed on May 6. This is when we review the year and share
successes, and accomplishments from the year. During Feb board meeting, Marci Houseman will be
doing a presentation on finding the why in board participation.
Endowment Account- We will be taking 10% of funds earned through fundraisers and put it into the
endowment account. This year’s amount will be $16,000. We will need Fred and Quinn to sign of on that
transfer after the meeting.
Scholarships- The foundation is currently facilitating 5 scholarships that run through us. Bright Star and
Rising Star scholarships will be renamed as the Canyons Strong Scholarship. It reflects the message of
students that show strength and overcome challenges to graduate. Canyons Strong is a districtwide
theme for employees and student achievement. One scholarship per high school for $2500. We will no
longer have a $3500 scholarship. Students will be recognized at the GALA. Applications are due Feb 28.
They will be sent out on March 1 to the board to help with scholarship selection. Denise will be sending
out a rubric. There will be a one week turn-around. This is an important part of what the Foundation does.
Participation in scoring is greatly appreciated. - Other Foundation scholarship is the ACE scholarship. It is for employees and one HS senior that
wants to be a teacher. The scholarship is up to $5000 per year for up to 4 years, tuition and fees
only. The fund has grown, almost double from last year. From 15k to 30k. - Millerberg Scholarship- 2000/year for 4 years. Focused on students that want to be either
accountants or teachers. - Bright Future Scholarship and Draper Chamber Legacy Scholarship from Bill Rappleye are also
run through the Foundation. - Dan Jorgenson has donated a Jordan High Specific scholarship for 8k/year.
Teacher of the Year- April 15. One teacher from each school will be celebrated. The foundation donates
$250 gift card to each winner, we also reach out to businesses for items to add to their gift bags. Posters
at schools will recognize all donors. We are looking for donations of 50 items from each company, so the
baskets are the same. Baskets are given in March when names are announced. Cyprus Credit Union is
donating the additional $2,000 for cash awards to the head winners from each level.
Holiday Giving- Thanks to the Larry H Miller Group, KSL Quarters for Christmas, Proof Point in Draper,
Tres Gatos, CSD employees, multiple community and church groups. We were able to serve hundreds of
students with $50 gift cards, food and other necessities.
Donations- Holiday Oil, $2K in gas cards, HCA Healthcare – $10K grant for food, BIC – in-kind donation of
pens and highlighters
Unified Sports- Tournaments are coming up. High School tournament on Feb 10 at CCHS. We will be
looking for volunteer to help with serving lunch to all the athletes. Tournament starts at 9, lunch should
be about 11:00 a.m. Canyons, Jordan and Murray districts will be represented.
Middle school tournament will be at Hillcrest HS on Feb 19, 2025. It should run 9-1. The Foundation will
be providing lunch at this tournament also.
Fun Run- Superhero Theme. May 10 will be the date. Lone Peak has superhero capes that they will
donate- about 1,000. Considering more of an inclusion fair to help bring in more students that are unable
to participate in the run.
Golf Tournament- Sept 18, 2025. We are already getting sponsors. Denise to send beverage needs to
Jenn Andrs.
2025 GALA MARKETING- Greg Summerhays, Committee Chair - March 27 at the Zion’s Technology Center
- Fundraising goal is $150K. This will be funding the Foundation Innovation Grants and
scholarships. - Save the date has been sent. Theme is “The Future is NOW” Tables of 8, hoping for up to 400
attendees. - Focus will be on Innovation Center and what it may look like. New director will speak and share
the vision of what is being created. - Denise is working on sponsors. Tracking document is up and running, committee will be working
hard to get sponsorships. All board members need to help get sponsorships. - Goal is to surpass 63K so an auction is not needed.
- Auction- Forgo doing the silent auction and focus raising money on a possible paddle raise or
sponsorship extras. - Photobooth- do we want to do a 360 or the traditional? McKayla will be researching price and
options.
